One of the biggest concerns I hear from parents considering newborn photos—especially when they already have kids—is simple:

This in-home newborn session in Apex, North Carolina, just before Christmas, is a good example of how gentle and easy it can actually be.

This family had just welcomed their third baby boy, and instead of trying to create a quiet or perfectly styled session, we let the morning unfold naturally.

What This Newborn Session Looked Like

We spent our time doing the things this family already loves to do together:

Reading books on the bed
Dancing around the house
Snuggling the baby
Decorating their Christmas tree

There was movement. There was noise. There were moments of calm in between. No one was asked to sit still for long, and no one was expected to perform.

That’s the approach I take with storytelling newborn photography, especially for families with multiple children. I gently guide when it’s helpful, but mostly I make space for connection to happen on its own.

A Moment That Stuck With Me

About halfway through the session, mom paused and said something like:

“This experience is so precious. I have tears in my eyes.”

For an hour, she wasn’t managing the day or keeping everyone on track. She was simply present with her family—holding her newborn, watching her boys, and soaking in this season as it is.

That’s what I hope these sessions give parents: time to slow down and be together, without pressure, and delight in the belonging of family.
